Ouvea – paradise of New Caledonia

It’s simple, Ouvéa is nicknamed the island closest to paradise. And honestly, that’s true! I only stayed there 2 days after the Isle of Pines but I really loved it!!

  • Les cocotiers cottage

I google and I had noticed that the best part of Ouvea is Mouli. So I wanted to stay there to enjoy its paradisiacal beach! I chose the cottage cocotiers (FYI there is a campsite not far from the beach in Lekiny). I had a hut with electricity and shared facilities with cold shower (it is very common on the islands). A kitchen was at my disposal too. The cottage does not transfer from / to the airport but on arrival I arranged with another cottage to benefit from their transfer (1050Fr).

Attention I met a French woman who was at the hotel Beaupré and found the beach not great so choose the place with attention!

  • Mouli’s beach

Just arrived, hop directly to the beach. In my top 5 most beautiful beaches in the world !! It is about 6km of white sand and turquoise water. And it has the big plus for me, there is no piece of dead coral and other shells in excess. So it’s very nice to walk there barefoot!

When I fell asleep quietly on the beach I had a surprise guest on my towel !! The dog of the cottage 😊

The evening, I took advantage of this heavenly place to go and run a bit 😊

And then enjoy the wonderful sunset!

  • the pleiads of South

Ouvea is an attoll bordered by few groups of islands called pleiads. I made a boat trip with Pierre’s group (who himself was absent). The appointment is at Lekiny campsite. I didn’t have any means of locomotion but know that there is a local bus that comes to Mouli and that will bring you for 150Fr. The activity cost 7500Fr. If you need snorkeling equipment it’s 1000Fr more. And if it’s cold like for me you can rent a diving suit for 1000Fr as well.

On board, we pass under the bridge Mouli amidst rays and turtles. It’s a nature reserve, you can swim near the beach but it’s forbidden to go far in the bay and you can’t snorkel. Then in the lagoon we could observe manta rays. And during the first stop snorkeling you can even swim nearby! For information there are waves and current, I was seasick while swimming…

I didn’t do the second snorkeling spot because of seasickness but it’s more focused on corals. Then the boat leaves to settle in a sheltered corner of the wind (thus more seasickness) the time of a tasted. You can also go in the water to visit some caves.

On leaving, the boat tries to attract sharks but we haven’t seen them that day!

When I returned, I decided to walk on the beach of Mouli (about 5km), it was so beautiful and peaceful that I wanted to take my time and enjoy the moment!

PS : I wanted to bring my lensball on the island of Ouvea but I had it in carry-on baggage and from recently they made checks at Magenta (not on the islands for now). So I had to leave it (free) at the airport. Knowing that I can take it everywhere else in the carry-on, like New Zealand. It’s good to make controls but they make a little too much here 😉.

For my return to the international airport, I booked a shuttle (with les mouettes because Arc-en-ciel didn’t perfom the lift for my flight) to connect the two airports of grande terre. There is about 45 minutes.
